The double white cross is the symbol of Slovakia, outlawed during the communist regime. The guy in front is a "Partisan", member of the guerilla movement to free Slovakia from Germans, connected with the Soviet Union.
Many historians say that this movement sacrificed too many both its members and local inhabitants since it purposefully went into struggles that had no chance of winning.

850/ 2nd. National "Spartakiada". Spartakiada was a huge enterprise where tens of thousands of children and soldiers and youngsters participated. It was beautiful to watch from above or on the TV, since people created huge moving ornaments with their hands, flags, rings etc. On the less bright side, many participants were forced to join - I know many kids who had problems because they didn't want to join. Also, the frequent preparations disrupted the teaching process at schools since more than half of the pupils were often missing for days. Prague, June 23rd - July 3rd, 1960.
