Zdractvoyche!

I'm sorry, I don't know how to write cyrillic on e-mails. I saw you at
the University of Washington (red square) yesterday. I was interested in
quite a few of the posters that I saw.
If you could send me an e-mail back as to where you will be on
such-and-such dates, or if there is a better way to get into contact with
you, let me know. I would also like to hear from you once your web-page is
updated.

Thank You (spaciba)

Dear Petr,

thanks for your e-mail. Talking about cool collections!! I've sent your URL to a number of collector

As for trading, I'm all for it. Unfortunately, I do ONLY Chinese posters, and although I checked your

As a collector of russian and polish posters, I am interested in

Could you give me the details?

Hello Peter
Thank you for your response. I work for a company that deals in Imperial
Russian and Soviet Artifacts, mainly doing Exhibitions. I studied under the
Head Curator of the Kremlin Museum, to Authenticate Imperial and Soviet
Military Orders as well as Silver pieces from makers like Faberge.
We are doing a project with Mr.. Gorbechev which is a mint project. We are
minting silver and gold medallions of his Legacy. Anyway, I wanted to get
into a side business of getting and accumulating these posters for a few
select clients of mine

You have a terrific site and I like the way its designed.

Peter,
Privet, priyehal iz Moskvy - of course you are right. I didn't find even
reprints, on the other hand I didn't look very hard. Strange because there
is a lot of other reprint/originals of Soviet propaganda very easy to find
(books, pins, wall hangings for only $30). Maybe because posters are
normally not something people kept in their houses.
Well I will look at your site and send my order soon...

russian posters from me, in the USA, to take back home to Russia!!! they
say that it used to be a part of their life and now they dont see these posters

Peter-I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed viewing your poster
collection. I'm a watchmaker & got started collecting Soviet era items
with their timepieces, and I've recently bought a couple Soviet
propaganda posters. Many of the watches and military timepieces I
bought just 3 years ago are now worth twice what I paid to acquire them
(though this is not my reason for collecting them) and I expect over
time the posters will also appreciate substantially.

Can you tell me what is the best way to diplay the posters while
preserving them? I'm sure the Soviet paper must be fairly high acid
(even by poster standards) and I'm vaguely familiar with the need for UV
blocking glass, acid free matting and foam backing when framing vintage
posters. Unfortunately, for poster sized frames the cost of just one
professionally done frame is about 3-4 times what I paid for both
posters! Any suggestions along these lines, and of places selling
framing supplies cheaply (especially online) would be appreciated. I'd
like to fram them myself.

Dear Peter,

Hello. My name is Antonin Lejko. I am a Czech. I have been in the United
States and Canada for eleven years now. I am very interested in your
collection of posters. I especially am fond of the one of Prachatice. I
hope to order it as soon as I can settle to a permanent address, as I have
been moving around a lot as of late for my work. I am curious to know from
what era your Czech "Our Free Colors" poster is from. Also why the poster is
in English. I find such posters uplifting. Especially since I have lived in
many North American cities, and all of them seem to me the same (except my
beloved Pittsburgh). New York, Washington, and Detriot are horrible places
in my view. Prague and Kyjev are my favorites places to be in. I wonder if
you would know where to find a collection of GDR propaganda like yours?
I enjoy your web page and I will order from you soon I hope.

The relevance to you??? well I am including an aspect of propaganda and how
women were represented during 1917 till 1922...i was wondering whether you
know of the existance of any posters from that period?

Thanks for your time reading this

Petr-I'll keep an eye out for the new additions. BTW, I noticed a
couple posters on your site labeled as depicting US president Harry
Truman (#s 049 & 051) when in fact they depict Richard Nixon.
Admittedly, the 2 are similar, but Truman was a Democrat while Nixon was
a Republican. Truman's great contributions to the human condition were
the unnecessary nuking of Japan at the end of W.W.II and his later
invention of the Cold War (Truman Doctrine) while Nixon is best and most
fondly remembered for his overwhelming paranoia, secret bombings of Laos
& Cambodia during his massive escalation of the Vietnam war (note poster
049 shows the "hawkish" Nixon sinking his talons into southern Laos) and
of course for his resignation of the presidency following the Watergate
scandal (Overwheling Paranoia In Action).

I have to admit that, although I'm aware of the failings of Soviet
communism (particularly under Stalin) I substantially agree with many if
not most of the broader sentiments put forth on a number of these
posters, which accounts partially (though not totally) for their appeal
to me. I gather from some of the links you have included on your site
(concerning ecology, nuclear proliferation, Napster, etc.) that although
you experienced a Soviet influenced political state first hand, you are
not blind to the failings of capitalism. As I am sure you're aware from
living in the USA, it is virtually impossible to have any sort of
dialogue here on the true merits and failings of our principle cultural
myths, such as the superiority of capitalism, the absolute righteousness
of the US and its culture in all matters internal and external, etc. I
would welcome a discussion of these issues if you have the time.

Sincerely,
David

dear Peter,
I have recently visited your site and I was very impressed about the amount of posters collected and your dedication towards this
subject which ,I know, is time and energy consuming. I was also fascinated by the quality of the works collected which I consider to
be masterpieces in graphic design and in art in general.
However, this collection , in my opinion, deserve a lot more than a website and should be publicly exhibited in an appropriate place
and scenery reflecting their true value . From this notion , I was wondering if you will be interested in exhibiting as well as publishing
this magnificent collection which will positively impact both the artistic as well as the financial aspect of this collection.
I am certain that this idea has a lot of potential ,so please take it into consideration and feel free in informing me about any reaction
or comment.

Peter,
I am glad that you wrote back. As to my proposition I was thinking, in a first step , in organizing an exhibition of your collection here
in Lebanon given that the atmosphere encourages such an idea , also I have raised this issue in front of some of my contacts and I
had a very positive response. The time and place of this exhibit will be determined after we exchange our options and ideas.
The issue of publishing the collection will be determined , in my opinion, after the exhibition takes place.
please send me any proposition you have.

dear peter,

I began talking with some potential sponsors regarding the exhibit and I can say that this idea is a certain success.. I am getting
very positive responses regarding this matter. I also discussed this issue in front of some of the graphic design teachers as well as
students ..
the issue regarding the place of the exhibit remains difficult to choose. 3 places are suitable and this issue should be discussed by
the two of us after I send you the details regarding the spaces.
we should start by choosing the kind of posters to exhibit and I wanted to know if you other than the posters posted in your website.
hope to hear from you soon.

Fri, 19 Jan 2001 12:47:45 +0200
dear peter

the exhibit generally involves your participation , not only by supplying the posters, but in your presence as well. I am merely trying
to organize the exhibit and your presence is essential knowing that it is you who collected the posters.
this exhibit is another way, in my opinion, to sell the posters and into acquiring more substantial customers .
I think you are a little bit worried about my interest in you posters, but I assure you that the whole idea isn't just a hoax and I am ,as
I said earlier, just trying to organize a suitable environment for these posters because the both of us know that they deserve to be
exhibited publicly.
please feel free in telling me if you have any other worries.

Petr-One of my favorite bands when I was a teenager was Steely Dan.
There music was quite sophisticated for the period (the band's name
comes from a term for a dildo from William Borough's infamous Beat
Generation novel "Naked Lunch"). In fact their sound still stands out
& I still enjoy them, which is something I couldn't say about the vast
majority of the music at the time & can say about still less of it now.

Anyway, they've recently produced a new album after a 20 year hiatus,
and I thought you'd enjoy one of the images they chose for their web
site about the new recording. When I first saw it I thought "my god,
that's got a familiar look to it", then it dawned on me. You can see it
at http://www.steelydan.com/2vnreviews.html . The 2 guys pictured are
the primary members of the group, Donald Fagan & Walter Becker, the
latter of whom has been said to look a bit like Trotsky.

I have recently become fascinated with the socialism and anarcho-syndicalism. I am looking to acquire posters of Castro,

What a cool site!

We adopted our daughter from Russia last year and people looked at me like I

Hi Peter,
I'm very impressed with your own history as a poster's world wide runner
My name is Martin and i'm living in Paris since 1990,originaly i was from Montreal and have an adventurous life . I am starting a new
activity;selling masses or commercial posters cheaply, compare to competition. But i would like to specialise myself(question of pleasing
myself)in selling soviet union or satellites, posters. Why?Because i like art and design and particular the constructivisism and suprematism!
I invest all my economy in my project and ,trying to be very competitive i'll sell some posters very low and make the profit in
board-mounting!...

Martin

Peter,

Your proposal sounds fair. I will send you back the damaged "Lidice" in exchange for a new copy. I will include a check for
the Lenin set 281a/b/c. Due to my impatience, I may decide to send the check by FedEx and the poster by regular first class
mail. But I am still thinking about it. I may come to my senses.

That's all for now,

DH
-----------------
Petr,

Hey, I just thought you would find this amusing. I went to the FedEx office yesterday and found out that it would cost $88 to
send an envelope to your address. Amazing huh? Anyway, needless to say, I will send you a check and the poster through
the ol' pony express. But please please please inform your partner to hold 281a/b/c for me. I would hate to have them sold
while my payment is en route. Thank you!!
Dear Russian poster site operator:

I was very impresesed by your website. I have a small set of earlier
Soviet era posters in reproduction that I bought in 1968 (most have 1967
as the reproduction date) that I want to donate to my library, have
mounted and use as a teaching tool. Can you tell me if the reproductions
have any great monetary value so that mounting them would be a bad idea?

Thanks and again, your site is very interesting.

Thanks for the quick response. I think we will encapsulate them- not
really mounting, just enclosing in inert plastic enclosures- for the time
being. My only concern then is the amount of damage which might be done
in handling because although no contact will be made with the poster
itself, it will remain flexible within the plastic.

original--which will be given to 25 New Orleans artists to "interpret." I
would love to have some Lenin posters to decorate the walls with and you have
some great ones; however, is there any discount offered to galleries who wish
to resell the posters?

Hi Petr

I have received the poster and it looks beautiful! Thansk you very much for
all your help

Sandi
Ahoj,
I began collecting Slovak and Czech propaganda posters a year ago when I visited my girlfriend's familiy in Bratislava. I now have
about 20 (none of which, incidentally, appear on your site). I've been checking in on your (well desigend, courteous, and
user-friendly) site from time to time.
I'm interested to hear your frank opinion on the value of reprints. Since my interest is developing, so is my experience and I'm
hestitant to purchase reprints with the modest amount of money I've put aside for this hobby. Am I better to buy an original or two
every year, or start by buying the government issue reprints with the intent of trading my way to those posters I'd really like to have.
Drop me a line if you have the chance.
Thanks for your site. I quite enjoy it.

I searched the whole net but I could`'t find anything. maybe u can help me.
an answer-mail would be nice

Hi,
I really like your posters collection. The site is a bit slow 8^(, but worth the wait.
I like to order the CD of the propaganda posters. I like to know the banknumber etc. etc. to get my payment to you.
Thanks,

Hi Petr, thanks for telling me about this.
I am working hard on version 2.0 of store builder. I am improving the

I am also working with AllPosters.com to improve the speed of the software

addressed in the next version. I'll let you know personally as soon as it is

Hello, Petr

First of all, I am in humble awe of your excellent English! I am embarrassed
to admit that I still have to watch the subtitles on our copy of Zdenek
Sverak's "Kolya". I studied Russian while working on my undergraduate degree
during the late 1960's, early 70's, but now, alas, I am very "rusty" in reading
it. I can read a word here and there, but in no way am I fluent.

I am planning on ordering a couple of your wonderful Russian propaganda
posters. Hopefully, they will still be available at that time. (We are moving
into our new research lab this week and I don't have the time to properly
devote the attention needed to select which ones right now.) I would like to
readjust the "reserve" posters that I would like to put my name on.) I did get
to spend quite a while on your website and read each and every poster and
studied each one on all 7 "pages".

After careful study, I would like to reserve, please: ...

I am having to figure in the size of the posters before I order them. My
daughter and her husband are living in a one bedroom apartment right now and
haven't a lot of wall space for the posters. (Come to think of it, we are
storing the propaganda posters she already has, so maybe I shouldn't be worried
about the size.)

You asked what my daughter was going to do with her Masters in National
Security once she gets her degree. Well, Georgetown University is an old (old
by US standards, not by European standards), private university in Washington,
D.C. Since they have the top National Security program in the US (and #2 in
the world) you can imagine who recruits the graduates. Actually, she is hoping
to work for the agencies so darkly portrayed on some of your posters. She and
her husband would like to study and work abroad at some point. Our daughter
studied at a university in France for a semester and, in fact, she and her
husband met on a study trip to Russia - sponsored by the University of
Wisconsin at Madison (where they are alumni). Her husband is fluent in
Russian, she in French, he studied Spanish, and they have traveled to Europe
together.

Our daughter has been interested in the Soviet Union since she was 12 years
old. She had a Social Studies teacher, much like you, who had traveled to many
parts of the world. He had been to the Soviet Union before she studied it, and
his insights peaked her interest in studying it further. All during her high
school years, we collected artifacts that we found for sale after the "fall" of
the Soviet Union. When she graduated from high school in 1996, the huge box of
these items was her graduation gift. Her two B.A.'s are in French and
International Relations. She specialized in Russian Area studies and Western
European Studies. She is still interested in Russia and Cold War Soviet
Union. Her interest is strictly academic. She is fascinated in the
maintenance of such a system by propaganda and is truly amazed that the system
lasted as long as it did.

Thank you for the information on payment methods. I will try to employ the
electronic transfer from our bank to yours. Prior to the transfer, though, I
will confirm that the posters I would like to order are still available. I
will then add $9 shipping and handling to that total. (Are you sure that $9 is
enough for mail from the Czech Republic?)

Thank you again for your kind attention to this.

Best Regards,
Sue
We haven't tried your phone service yet, but you seem like a real nice guy.
Janice and I are in Montreal visiting my brother who is working here. We live in
Minneola, Kansas and have two cute dogs named Pig and Bill. They actually belong to my
mother Ann who lives next door. Pig and Bill have a red squirrel friend
named Mr. Reginald, who is a tree jumping daredevil. Jim is going to take us to meet
all the friends he has made in St. Sauvuer des Monts. Today we ate salads and
Chinese food and walked around window shopping with the other tourists.

Hello Peter, thanks again for the invaluable input. I am linking to your
site on several pages of my site. I have just
uploaded the first beta (test) release of version 2.0 of my software. It
fixes the problem mentioned below. I still need to write documentation,
finish a few advanced features and do so more bug fixing. If you get a
chance give it a whirl.
Hello, Petr

In view of the recent tragedies in New York and Washington, D.C., I wanted to
touch base with you to let you know that I won't be ordering any of the three
posters you currently have available. The reason is that my desire to purchase
them for my daughter is overridden by my desire to keep the posters safe. I am
afraid that packages entering the U.S. will be opened and inspected for the
next few months. One-of-a-kind and rare items may be "traumatized" by over-
worked Customs agents. I don't want any of the fragile posters being
inadvertently ripped or torn, especially those that already have small tears,
etc.

I am sure that once things settle down into a routine, then we can order
without worry for the item being sent. It wouldn't be fair to you, though, and
I didn't want you to lose a sale if someone else was interested in any of the
three you have my name on - #404, #406, #484.

I will keep in touch with you in the near future. I would like to ask you to
please keep my name on the "reserved" posters. The few months delay in those
may be fortunate for us. Two days before the attack I faxed an order for a 400
year old book from a bookseller in Stockholm. I am very worried about the book
and am waiting to hear from the bookseller regarding whether it was sent or is
still in Stockholm, or was on a plane bound for the U.S. I have great concern
for rare and/or fragile items. I don't want my desire to purchase them to put
them in danger of destruction or loss. It is more important that the items
stay safe.

Thanks so much for your understanding. I will email you when I feel that it is
safe to once again order from overseas. As of right now the main entry points
for Customs are closed and who knows what is happening to packages destined for
U.S. addresses.
My husband and I bought and old house and found old posters in the wall.
Interested in selling.
im pretty lazy to look through all the images so if you could tell me wether
you have something like a VIctor Tzoi poster or maybe Nautilus Pompilus or
even maybe where i can get such a thing if it exists SPasibo for looking at

Hi, Peter. I saw your site and was charmed - I've never seen such a
cool collection of old Czech and other propaganda posters. I have often
been amazed by how few are available for sale in Prague, despite tens of
millions being printed over the years.

I am keen to buy some of your posters, but would like to examine them
first. I live in Prague - are you based here? If so, could I visit you
sometime?

Hi Peter,

poster and who owns the copyright of the image? I would like to
request permission from them.
I look forward to hearing from you--Thanks much for your help!

i am a student from switzerland and i'm very interested in eastern europe. i
save all my money for trips to the czech republic (i was in praha in

really like your site, you have a very nice and (as far as i can judge) very
complete collection of posters! i'd really like to have one, ...
what poster would you recommend for me? i'd like to have an original poster
of russian propaganda, with cyrillic letters, maybe an obvious picture of
lenin or something like that, it doesn't have to be best quality, just
impressive! thank you very much for your help!!

hi peter,

just sent you a couple of mails for reserving prints.
i have to say that i think the collection is a credit to you and that
i am very much impressed.
much of the history behind these prints is very special to me, and i have spent the last 2 hours browsing
your collection.
i`m 27, and live here in dublin city, ireland.
I work as network consultant mostly working on community network projects.
would very much like to but some prints from you, particularly the some of the soviet and cuban "film" posters.
drop me a line if you get a chance and let me know when you think that some of these will come available and if
they have already been reserved.
who knows, if they do come available, i would be more than happy to come to prague to meet with you.
kind regards

-----------------
thanks for getting back to me, would hope to make a visit to prague sometime in the next 6 months. there are several of your
posters i would also be very interested in buying.
i have a suggestion for you....
how would you feel about coming to dublin to give an exhibition of propaganda art ?
i would be very happy to promote and organise it, and think that you could take peoples details who would be interested in
purchasing some of them as well.
i estimate that there would be a large demand for such artwork and i know of several potential venes and perhaps also a
sponsor.
let me know what you think, will in the meantime send you the reference details of the posters i am interested in.
best regards from dublin

As you know Guinness is the national drink here in Ireland, and in the
area of the city where the brewery is, there is a multimedia centre
called the storehouse.
It is a very large building and designed to be a "visitor centre" for
Guinness.
A friend of mine is the creative director of the Storehouse and is
looking for new art orientated exhibitions to have at the venue.

I am putting together a proposal for him to read, with reference to the
type
Of poster art in your collection.

I need to know from you though, if you were to come to Dublin,
How many posters would you bring with you ? Of which category would they
be. Russian, Cuban etc .. ? Would you intend on selling them while you
are here ? Would you be interested in selling them online ?

This proposal I will be able to use not just for the Storehouse ( with
Guiness as drinks sponsor ), but also for other venues and alternate
sponsors.

If you can answer the above questions, and also give me as much
background information and history as you can about your collection, it
will help to move things along.

Hello Petr,
I've been trying to figure it the international wire transfer with my
bank and so far they are no help, but they are supposed to have a
manager call me. In the meantime, I received the poster--thank you so
much! It is beautiful. I am sorry that the payment has not gone
through yet. Do you want me to keep trying to wire with my bank, or
would you prefer if I sent you a money order or personal check? I
don't want to keep you waiting for your payment.
Best,
Emily
--------------------
Hi Petr,
I think the wire transfer went through this morning! Let me
know what you hear from your bank, but it all looked good
on my end. For some reason, when I first went to the bank,
they insisted that they didn't wire money in Czech currency
or directly to Czech banks, so they sent me home to look up
who the intermediary was. Then I wired US dollars to the
Bank of New York, and it was sent back several days later.
Then this time, when I asked what my other options were,
they said they were able to wire Czech money directly to
Ceska Sporitelna. This seems ridiculous--I never would have
involved the NY bank in the first place if they hadn't
insisted it was the only way. I guess my bank is just not
that on-the-ball. Thanks again for your patience with this
and for the poster--it's beautiful!
Take care,
Emily
Dear Peter,
I show the posters in your website. I cannot want to
buy one at this time, but I would love to reproduce
one in a magazine featuring articles on eucation and
propaganda. What is your policy on this?

Thanks kindly for the wonderful scans you sent me, Petr! They are priceless....Truly, truly FUNNY!! A wonderful keepsake,
I can see why you don't want to sell it! But except for the first color picture showing the Party flag behind the Tricolor, it does
not show the RED FLAG that served as the national flag of the DRA for the years 1978-80. So please keep a lookout for
this, in case you ever see it. (This flag was quickly withdrawn, after only two years, because it made the Muslims SEE RED, if

Dear Peter,

I just got the posters from an old man, from Poland, who lives in the
building I am in.
The one I am sending has something hand written in the top and bottom
borders, in Russian. However the writing is in the same printing process
as the rest of the poster. It seems to be a color separation lithograph.
I don't now much about this. Unfortunately, It seems to have been dry
mounted on a piece of cardboard. I know it is possible to remove it and I
have a friend that has a paper restoration shop in N.Y.. If it is worth
the removal. It was framed and I just removed it from the frame to see if
it had any other printing on it. The paper is not slick but seems to have
a fine texture.
I am just learning to use my scanner so I will do my best to send you this
photo.
Suzanne
-----------
Here is the other poster. I am afraid it as been dry mounted and than trimmed. It has the artists name and the yeat 28. These
must have been framed in the 50s when they dry mounted everything that did not move.

Dear Peter

My name is Kota Sakurai and I am contacting you from Hiro Enterprises, Inc., a television & film production company based in New York City specializing in production managing programs for Japanese media.

Currently, I am conducting a research for a Japanese program called "Kaiun Nandemo Kanteidan" airing in Japan on TV-Tokyo. This is a family oriented program about antiques and collectibles, similar to "Antique Roadshow" shown on PBS here in U.S..

For its upcoming episode, the program is planning to feature a special segment called "I will sell my treasure." I have seen your website and I was impressed about your committment, devotion, and the risks you have taken to pursue your interest. If I may, I would like to know more about you and your collection. I would also like to express our interest for a possible interview with you. Would you be able to provide us with the information about your availability for an interview and restrictions (if any) in regards to the selling of your collections?

Dear Peter

Thank you very much for your timely response.

As stated earlier our program has undergone a change in process and we are
currently searching for a collector who is available to be filmed and wants
to sell his or her entire collection.

Please allow me to ask you a couple of questions for the processing of the
program. As a reference the program would like to know the following.
-despite the magnitude of your collection would there be no hesitation in
releasing your entire collection all at once? Is it possible for us to know
the reason why you would not mind selling your entire collection in a
scenario such as this one?
-the value of your entire collection. Forgive me for asking such a
question, as I am aware that a collection of your scale cannot be measured
in terms of numbers. But to those, such as the viewers, who are not
familiar with the aspect, understanding the numerical value is one way of
reference.
I appreciate your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing from
you soon.

Hi Pter !!
I got the CD with the pics some days ago. They are really great !!

I see you also collect posters from Germany. Well, I have some more pictures
(yet need to be scanned) from the time 1920 to 1945. But well, here it's
forbidden to give them away.
Anyway, I think, when I am back from China I will create a good collection
and send you all new stuff then..

Cya and thank you
Martin

Hi. I知 a poster dealer in Boston, Mass. I was looking at your site and saw some originals that are of interest. I would like to get
dealer prices from you on several pieces. I am wondering where you are located and how best to work together.

I will be in my gallery tomorrow (Tuesday) and you can call me there to discuss. Or you can let me know your number and the best
time to reach you.

Robin Vaughan Regis Records UK

am not sure if we will have time for post
Is it not possible for you (if we decide and agree price) to send by email a JPEG or TIFF file at HIGH RESOLUTION eg 300 dpi at size 12cm x 12cm minimum?
Best Wishes

Dear Peter
we would like to buy a download or an EMAIL (Jpeg or tiff)
of the poster 2653.det1 (group of men with flag behind and a sheaf of corn above heads)

We would like this for the cover (12cm x 12cm) of a low price classical CD

we need 300dpi at least and at least 12cm x 12cm size- OK if it is bigger

How could we get this quickly? You say you could put it on a CD and post it, but that would take sometime from Czech
republic, and we may not have time.

We need to move quickly- how much please would we need to pay to use this image?
We normally pay between 30 and 60GBP for an image

If you are confident that we can do this, and that postage woud arrive quickly, please tell me now

The address for our designer is ...

But it woud be MUCH better and less risky if you can send the emial we need to ...

Please let me know quickly or we will have to use a different poster from somewhere

Best Wishes

If I am a collector living in the Czech Republic, what payment methods would
you prefer?

I am looking for two ICAIC Cuban film posters: one for Por Primera Vez and one for Cine Movil, both with the graphic of
Charlie Chaplin depicted. Do you have any idea where I might find wither or both? Thanks. Jaqui O'Shaughnessy
